IPFW At Any Age

Helen Wappes ’82, alumna

While IPFW is ethnically and racially diverse, age is another factor that diversifies its large student population. While most students are in the typical college age range of 18–24, there are many students from other age groups. Some 16-year-old students decide to start their college careers early through the Collegiate Connection™ program. On the other hand, there are first time and returning adult students in their 70s!

Alumni Helen Wappes can attest to the incredible age diversity on campus: “I started [at IPFW] when I was 39 years old,” she says. “At this time in my life, I realized I wanted to be a teacher.”

As a wife, mother, and grandmother, Wappes kept busy as she attended IPFW, eventually earning a master’s degree. After teaching for 20 years, she came back to IPFW.

“I continued my interest to learn,” she says. “All at the age of 75.”
