Growing in Leadership

Derek A. Smith, current student

“IPFW has the great ability to change lives,” says current student Derek Smith.

For most students, the rigors of college include studying, writing papers, and socializing with their friends. However, college is more than just these events: it’s also a chance to learn more about one’s self, abilities, and to grow as a person!

Smith attributes his change to the Leadership Conference, which he attended last fall. Now starting its 14th year, the Fall Student Leadership Retreat is for first semester IPFW freshmen who want to learn more about themselves, others, diversity, and building a connection with IPFW. Participants stay at a camp for 24 hours and are led by IPFW upperclassmen and staff members.

At the Leadership Conference, Smith “saw the power of individuality, friendship, and leadership,” he claims. “If I can be changed dramatically in one day, imagine the finished product after I graduate from IPFW!”
